Ok, I have an older tattoo done completely in black about 3inches by 3inches. I want to have a cover up done but the design I am thinking about has some white in it. I dont want the old one to show thru anymore than it has to but I was wondering if white can even cover over black to start with. Any thoughts?

the tattoo will have to be bigger than the current one. the tattoo artist should be able to position it so that it can be covered but white generally does not cover black. i have a friend who had a black tattoo covered up and there was some white in it but you can still kindof see a black line or two where the white went over. white just doesn't cover black completely. for that reason just any tattoo can't cover another one. the best thing to do is to take the design to a tattoo artist. they should be able to modify it or let you know if it can even be done.

Depending on how faded the black is, it might give the area some tone and color, but you really can't cover up black very well. However, if you want the best and most accurate answer about what can be done about your tattoo, you should see a professional tattoo artist. Seeing the area is better than any description given on the internet.

Good luck.

Hey white in tattooing is used mostly for highlights. Any black tattoo can be coverd up. White would not be able to cover a strait black tattoo because with time the white would fade and you would get a Grey look. but if white was used for highlights with other colors then you would have better results for your cover up. I know I'm a tattoo artist. here to help answer your questions.
