This question is given to those who have lived in Washington DC. Please do not depend upon statistics; just your own experience:

I've read that the Northwestern Quadrant of Washington DC is relatively safe. I've also read that the Northern and Western suburbs of DC are very safe. These suburbs are: Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax and Loudoun counties in Virgina, and Montgomery and Howard counties in Maryland.

How true is this statement? Are these counties safer than most of the USA? Is Gerorgetown, DC a safe place; along with the other parts of Northwestern DC?

I'm looking forward to serious answers. If detailed, they'd be better. Thanks a lot in advance.

NW DC is definitely the safest quadrant. In the past 10 years I have lived in Montgomery County (Bethesda), Fairfax county (outside Falls Church), and Howard County (Columbia).

I would say that NW DC gets safer the further from the center of town you go. I would consider Georgetown to be safe (lots of very expensive homes = lots of rich people = police presence). All the areas I have lived in have been/are really safe, but those are not blanket statements for those 3 counties. For instance, Montgomery county's best areas are south and west, as you go north and east, you can see some change, but not many unsafe places. Fairfax county, while one of the most affluent counties in the US, has some less desirable areas. Same with Howard County.

Not sure how to judge if it's safer than most of the USA. In terms of densely populated suburban areas, I would think that all the areas you mentioned are way above average in terms of safety.

That's actually the safest part of DC. Georgetown especially. I also grew up in Montgomery County, MD and it is extremely safe. Any other parts of DC are very UNsafe. Howard County is also safe. Not sure about any of the other counties in VA though but I know Fairfax County is pretty nice.

I've lived in NW DC for about a year now and have never felt unsafe. Of course, there are streets and neighborhoods I would probably stay out of, just like in any town, but overall this area is the best in DC. I'm a small town girl and I was petrified moving here, but now that I am here I feel comfortable riding the bus, shopping, even walking after dark. Best areas of NW: Georgetown, Cathedral Heights, Cleveland Park, Tenleytown and more. You might run into some car thefts and such in Colombia Heights, Mt Pleasant, and Dupont Circle.
