If he has asthma you may want to stick with getting another standard poodle as the dog is large enough for your brother to play with and the fur is really hair and should not irritate his breathing as easily as other dogs may.

Down Syndromes is a genetic disorder the place they've 47 chromosomes as an alternative of the typical forty six, people are the one type of existence that can get this genetic malfunction which puppies are immune to. The canine is in general still adapting to its new enviroment so I feel you ought to do more study earlier than you post idiotic questions like this on Y/A

My choice would be a Golden Retriever because they are
patient, loyal and protective of their master. Also they have a calm personality which may be better for your brother than a Hyper active type of dog. You would have to find out if he is a sensitive to the longer fur of the retriever before getting one.
You may have to go back to a poodle because of the asthma.
Good luck in finding the best type for him.

Most breeds that are mixed with a poodle. They do not shed and are asthma friendly.
I own 4 St Bernards-They are the gentlest dogs and both my husband and 1 son have asthma.
Good Luck and ask your vet.

Hi...my youngest son has DS as well and we have 2 dogs. they both are great with my son, but I have to say my german shepherd is the best! they are very loyal, intelligent and easy to train. they do require a lot of exercise as well as obedience classes, but if you can get a well socialized pup, I would recommend them. My son is 3 yrs old and adores our GSD. the best part is that kirby tolerates all the hard loving with out any problems, he even herded my son back to me this past summer when he went too close to a busy road...I couldn't ask for a better dog!

Pure breeds: Golden Retreiver and Border Collie are both very smart and patient dogs...
I would take him to a shelter and see how different dogs and he interact with each other... personal at shelters are usually really good with understanding temperments of their dogs and which will match up best... from what I have witnessed these dogs can be the most loyal and you dont run into all the genetic issues that pure breeds run into.

Akita's have been used for this purpose the world over.
I know you think big scary dog, but that's just not true.
Akita's are used in special schools, hospitals and zoo's. This is a proven fact and anybody who thinks different does not understand or know anything about the breed.
I would go for an Akita.

I am a pug lover myself & have asthma and they do not bother me at all. My daughter has a lab and they have such a sweet disposition. So it depends on how you feel comfortable with. He may be rough for a little dog & labs are about medium size and like I said a sweet disposition & my asthma does not bother me when I watch her dog.

Definitely a poodle or poodle-X. Labradoodles are the new popular breed. They're hypoallergenic (don't cause pet allergies), don't shed as much, and are loving, adorable, big dogs.
