The 1.5 mile test was established (by Harvard scientists i think) as a good examination of lung capacity, and therefore aerobic fitness. If you are taking the army test and have not shown any respect for the test( and BTW this is the absolute minimum) then you will get the result you deserve and loose a good career in the prospect.
When you try again, get yourself on a treadmill to establish a rhythm and comfort with the pace required. Then take it on the road. Do at least 2 miles 4 times a week. Each 2 mile run should be done at the same pace as will comfortably pass the 1.5 mile test.
For example 15 mins for 2 miles = 7.30 mins for 1 mile = 11.15 for 1.5 miles.
Good luck next time.

No unless you already could. Running is bad on an unfit body. You have to start out slowly and work your way up slowly. You can do permanent damage to your joints. I would begin by walking briskly every other day for a mile. Then two then three over the course of weeks gradually increase the speed or distance. But you have to take at least a couple of days off to allow your body to recover. Eventually you can start a jog. I would not attempt this until the weight comes down. ( Joint damage) depending on your shape before it should not take long before you will be running 6 minute miles .12 minute mile and a half can almost be accomplished with a brisk walk.

Yes, it is because I am also in the military and I used to smoke two packs a day and I could still run 2 miles in 12 minutes or less. What you need to do is run long distances (6-8 miles) a day for a few weeks. It probably won't be possible by Friday, but you will be ready for next time. What might help is to take two Xenadrine before you go out to your PT test.

Im assuming your on about the army basic fitness level run.
How close are you to your time?
I doubt you can get to that level from doing no exercise between now and Friday.
If you can I would back out of joining up until you can do the run in the time allowed. Train like a demon until you can do it comfortably. Running in the gym on a treadmill is no good to you. Get out in the cold and run the hardest terrain you can find. The army wont let you run in a nice cozy gym so its a waste of time practising in one.
So you need to chop 4 minutes off in a week. That is do able. If your doing it in 16 mins I wouldnt class you as unfit. Push yourself hard (really hard) and you will do it

If your talking about doing a BPFA for army selection then I wouldnt worry about it unless you are seriously unfit you should have no problem completing it in 12 mins,
I smoke and can run a BPFA in just under 9 minutes, good luck and dont give in, if you walk you will never do it keep running and sprint at the end xx

Not sure if you will succeed or not, but what you have to do is decide what pace you will run being comfortable and stick to this pace. Don't go hell for leather or you will never finish. You will get a lot of encouragement from the Army, and they will help you to do it as much as they can. I will wish you all the luck in the world and let us know how it went.

you will not be able to train yourself to run by Friday. In fact- if you try and train hard now, your muscles will be tired by Friday and you'll actually be slower.
1.5mi in 12 min is an 8 min mile. It's a comfortable jogging pace (for me, a 42 year old guy)

If your worried about not being able to pass the test during basic then dont cause they will get you in shape during that time. Just put forth the effort while there and you will do fine.
If your already in, then why haven't you been to PT I know they PT at least 3 times a week. If this is the case you might just have to run till you puke, I dont think you have enough time to do it by friday.

it is doable because 12 minutes is plenty of time. you need to train every day up until friday, take a relaxed jog on thrusday and then on freiday push yourself, but you have to start training hard today and tomorrow. be quick.you can do it

here is my advice for you.
1. get as much training in as possible ( maybe go to a track )
2. stretch before every every run ( even when friday comes )
3. drink plenty of water and eat healthy foods ( cottage cheese turkey burgers ect...)
4. get plenty of rest get up at 6:00a.m. go to a gym or a track and run
* this is a normal day for me every day i do this it should be simple to do for you just go to bed by 8:00 *
