There are fruit salads that are like just fruit that is cut up in pieces but my favourite is how my Gram (who raised me!) used to make:
oranges (you can use mandarin oranges if table oranges aren't available or tasty)
apples (sliced in very small pieces with skin on
bananas
peaches
pears
strawberries
mangoes
papayas
starfruit (if you feel fancy, be sure to slice them so that the star shows)
and most importantly: nuts
You can use pecans but walnuts is the usual one my gram used and be sure that all the pieces are cut/ crushed into very, very small pieces except for the starfruit and bananas
Then! The next step is to put in a dry package of strawberry, cherry, or strawberry-kiwi jell-o mix. Do not add water to any of this and you can also use sugarfree jell-o. It helps to sweeten any of the fruit that might be a little bit bitter and when the fruit juices "marry," it helps to make a consistent sauce.
When I make this, I do no less than 1 gallon at a time. If that's too much for you, pack some up and give to friends! It's a wonderful gift and stored in the fridge, it lasts almost a week.

I love the tropical fruits as well, but the best and most simple is a bowl of strawberries and cream, why add anything to perfection?
