Yes, here are a few of the more common tax breaks:

Taxpayers can deduct up to 50% of clean up costs in the year they are paid or incurred.

If a taxpayer takes a distribution from a 401k or pension, those are tax free if you are in a GO Zone. Up to $100,000.

For 2005 and 2006, individuals can claim an additional personal exemption of $500 for each Hurricane Katrina displaced individual, up to a maximum of $2,000 for both years.

Students attending eligible education institutions in the GO Zone are eligible for increased Hope and Lifetime learning credits.
Hope increases to $3,300 and Lifetime increases to 40% of the first 10,000 of qualified expenses for a maximum of $4,000.

There are some special tax breaks for Katrina victims. He should see a CPA (NOT someplace like H&R Block) to be sure he takes advantage of anything he's eligible for.

You might want to have your boyfriend talk to a CPA (someone certified to do taxes) and not the 'friends' at H & R block who do taxes for two months after 3 weeks of training.
GOOD LUCK
