Starting to today you need a passport, only when flying. If you drive in you can still use a licence or birth certificate. That will also change soon so apply for a passport to be safe in the future.

At this point they only apply to air travel but in the next couple of years a passport will be required at border crossings on the ground as well.
The extended regulations, which will require passports for anyone entering the U.S./Canada by land, sea, or air, are expected to take effect in 2008.

Only if you are flying, until July, 2008. But having a passport if you are driving is advisable; it helps speed your way through US Customs and Immigration.

yes you only need a passport if you were flying not driving
but it *couldn't to have a passport*
even if you were driving to Canada, who knows it could speed you though the lines?
and eventually it will be reburied..
so I would suggest if you have passport take it anyway.
it never hurts if you don't have one; apply for one soon!
