Weve tried everything under the sun, i think she gets the concept, but it seems like she cant hold it. and she knows she does wrong, bc everytime she goes on the floor she runs and hides. we dont leave her food sitting out either, so she cant continually eat. she also goes in her cage, and its not to big for her either. i know dachshunds are hard to train, but i never knew it would take this long. What do i do?????

Hi hcgirl88!! Potty training takes lots of time and patience on your part. Starting even from a 8 mnth old puppy dachshund, it could be 3-6 months before a dog is fully potty trained.

Puppy litter box training is fundamentally the same as outdoor potty training. You essentially watch your puppy constantly (and I mean CONSTANTLY) when they're not in the kennel. If they begin to go potty or act like they might need to go potty you take them outside/to the puppy litter box and wait for them to go.

If they go you go crazy like it's the best thing ever and reward them with something.

You also should take them to their potty place as soon as they wake up, after they eat, after they play, etc. The difference between a litter box and puppy pad is just what you want them to go potty on.

I'm a huge fan of crate coaching to support with potty coaching. A canine will not potty in a correctly sized crate. When they're up and out, you need to take puppy out: right away upon waking 15 minutes after consuming or ingesting 15 minutes after vigorous play every 60-90 minutes if you have not had her out for any other motive above last thing earlier than crating at night also, get a really just right enzyme cleaner to scrub up the messes in the residence so that she can not get the dependancy of going again to the odor when she does have a mishap. Excellent good fortune!

Sounds like you are on the right track...have you scolded her for going on the floor in the house? This might be why she runs and hides.

Watch for signs that she needs to go...sniffing around, going by the door, etc. Also, set up a schedule. Take her out after eating, napping, playing. Do not play with her outside until she goes. As soon as she does her biz outside, praise like crazy and play!

If she is going to be in her crate for an extended period, try taking her out every hour. No more than 2 hours between potty times.

Good luck with that. We had a dachshunds for 13 years and we could pretty much count on them crapping or peeing in the house once a week.

I have German Shepherd Dogs now, and haven't had a problem in the house since the little one was about 6 months old.

i had to keep telling mine to 'potty outside and i'd throw her outside for 20 minutes each time she did inside.... and i always made a big deal out of it either way, if she did good, she got big praise, and if she did bad, she got 'bad dog, potty outside!' and i'd put her outside. Dauschunds are the sweetest most loving little dogs and i kind of used that for me, she gets her feelings hurt so bad, and she learned from it. i never laid a hand on her. didn't need to. 2 months after i got her, she was trained (she was 4 months when i got her). over a year and a half since we had an accident, even if i leave her all day by herself (which is rare).

good luck, but be paitent. my step mom never has been able to potty train her doxies.... but i don't think she's ever really tried, either..... lol

have fun with her!

She does not run and hide because she feels bad she runs and hides because you probably swat her or tried putting her nose in it. House breaking is simple but you must be consistent.

At night! In the crate. period.

During the day take her our every hour when you are home and when she goes outside lots of praise and treats. YOU HAVE TO WATCH HER INSIDE. If you go to the bathroom and come back out and notice pee and you swat her she will not know what she did. When you catch her in the act you pick her up and you take her strait outside and if she goes lots of praise.

When you are away at work, put her in the bathroom with a baby gate.

Have any more questions email me.

Dachshunds are very hard to housebreak. I rescued one at the age of 3 and after 4 years, she still isnt housebroken. Make sure she goes out every single time you take her out of her crate and watch her go. Praise her like crazy and continue to take her out and repeat every 2 hours.
