Lots of confusing advice -- some right and some wrong -- thus far.

To get your call out of the UK you dial 00

To get into the North American long distance system of which Canada is a part, you dial 1

You then dial the regional code which in Canada tends to go with the province. For example all Nova Scotia and PEI numbers are in the 902 code area. These codes are always three figures.

You then have a code with denotes the town (further 3 digits) and finally a four digit number.

So it's the international code from the UK plus the standard American long-distance dialling format

00 - 1- XXX - XXX - XXXX

Remember that you can use Skype to call into the North American system for no more than the price of a local call and there are many international indirect calling setups that will give you calls for around 1p per minute to Canada. A web search will turn up lots and 1p/minute is the figure you should look for, possibly with a connection charge of not more than 5p.

It's a 1. Got a fabulous diary that tells you dialling codes, to and from. From the UK is 00, so the full number will be 001.

011+1-(xxx) xxx-xxxx
011 because it's an overseas number...and then 1 and the area code (3 digits) and then the person's number (7 digits).
Ex: 011+ 1 (222) 222-2222
