Sounds like what they call PMDD. It's fairly new, but here's a quick summary..
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder or PMDD is a condition associated with severe emotional and physical problems that are linked closely to the menstrual cycle. Symptoms occur regularly in the second half of the cycle and end when menstruation begins or shortly thereafter. PMDD is not just a new name for premenstrual syndrome (PMS), a condition that affects as many as 75% of menstruating women. It is, however, considered to be a very severe form of PMS that affects about 5% of menstruating women. Both PMDD and PMS share symptoms in common that include depression, anxiety, tension, irritability and moodiness. What sets PMDD apart is its severity. Women with PMDD find that it has a very disruptive effect on their lives. You should see your gynecologist as most of this is fairly new and there are treatments available.

Yes, this is a very real and very common. GREAT you did the clockwork... you are now better prepared to start tackling your mood.
I found what worked best: Is to watch what I ate, and be sure I got extra sleep 2-3 days before my symptom days.
No caffeine... No Soda, No coffee (only de-cafe Tea)
No Potato Chips (salt & starch)
Corn chips ok, and unsalted popcorn ok.
Yogart or Milk- great choices!!
Wheat - cereal or breads good choices!!
Chocolate & Sugars NO..
walk, walk, walk, or ride bike- very good!!
everyone's physical makeup is a bit different.. see what works and does not work for you... I would not want to deny anyone their sweets,,, I just know, I and everyone around me has to pay the price when I do not take care of myself these few days ea. month.
Good luck - working it through.. you are more than half way there.

Sounds like you are being affected by the hormone that causes ovulation around day 14. Have you seen a doctor? Are you on birth control pills? They help. There are foods to avoid and some that help too. Watch to see if you can tell a food that makes you feel better or bad. There are supplements that help, but a doctor needs to asess the whole picture . Can you tell when you ovulate? My daughter has gone through it.

I have mood swings before my period starts - and sometimes during my period. If you are having major issues with mood swings, it might be something else. You can talk to your GYN about it. It could be hormonal.
You might also want to talk to a therapist. It could be that you might have a personality disorder like bipolar.
