My friend has recently lost 20lb of weight through exercise and some diet. His weight is constant now. He had %fat of 24% when he started. We could not find an answer to a question: What was that he actually lost? Was it only fat? Or muscles? Or bones? Or water (water coming from what parts of a body: fat, muscles, blood, bones?). If not a single source of weight loss what is a percentage of each material that was lost? Does anyone have a good explanation or link to sites with answers?

If he is serious about weight loss, there is technology that will tell you waht your body is made up of. It breaks it down like this: muscle and skeletal, fat and water composition. It is always good to do this first and compare later on...if he is continuing to do this, get him to run this test now and than test in a month or so again. Gyms have this technology.

If your friend has been exercising, chances are he gained some muscle, especially if he was also working with weights, but even cardio will work muscle and sometimes carrying your own weight for some can be a workout. Some diets that don't include exercise will mean muscle loss.

He probably lost a little water too at first. You should always keep drinking water on a program to ensure that this isn't what you're losing.

You won't lose blood or bone from being healthier.

The rest should be fat! Good for him!

Tell him not to worry so much about the scale and check to see how his clothes feel...an awesome indication of his hard work.

I am so sick of this country's weight loss thing. Most programs and products will only make your wallet thinner and you might loose weight for a short time then gain it back. It isn't always about junk food or over eating. everybody's body chemistry is different. some people are really poor and cannot afford to eat healthy. medications can make you bloat up without over eating as will hormonal imbalances. I was on antidepressants for 10 years and blew up like a balloon and I just don't stuff my face alot. I eat the best I can. I also have hormonal problems. I am no longer on meds and gone natural. I also read an article about that it's not about calories but try to eat healthy. and dieting will only screw up your system. good luck to your friend. who knows what he lost. could be a combonation of things.

There is no one answer to this that will be correct for everyone. The only way to know what was lost is to test the body composition again. If strength training and cardio was done, what has likely happened is that some body fat was lost, and some lean body mass gained.

If only cardio was done, then lean body mass gained may be negligible.

If water weight was lost, say due to taking a diuretic, be aware that water is present in a higher proportion in lean body mass than in fat.

Find out his current body fat percentage. Then you can figure out how much lean mass and fat he had before and compare it to after.

He probably lost both fat and muscle, hopefully mostly fat if he included strength training and consumed adequate amounts of protein.
