A female in estres sends her scent on the wind. Males will be attracted and some do some amasing things to get out and to get to her.

This is instinct and not a learned behavior and there isn't really much you can do about it. Except that nasty word "neuter".

With my 30 years of working with dogs I have found that it is usually a male thing when it comes to neutering a dog. Men somehow take this issue very personal.

Just like a typical man can get excited and not be allowed gratifaciation so can a male dog. It doesn't hurt either one of you. He will carry on like that for months on end cause a female cycles twice a year and there are a lot of females that are not spayed and there for we get the 'unwanted population' expolsion.

Now, I am a very firm believer in spay/neuter of pet quality animals. They are not being shown and they are very poor quality do to BYB's. A quality dog will come with a Pedigree which is much different from AKC papers. And is very very important when it comes to breeding.

Sorry you had to read stuff you did not want to read but the more information you have the better your decission.

My dog does the same damn thing!! He'll sit at the back door, and howl, very quietly. I mean, so quiet, it sounds like a wolf, about a mile away!

Unfortunately, there isn't anything you can do about it, except have him fixed. I know, it doesn't seem fair to the dog, but it's the only thing that controls(sort of!) the population of animals we have, and it also keeps control of their aggression! As soon as we get our income taxes, we're taking my dog to get fixed. he's becoming more and more animal aggressive, since we brought him inside. We don't know why, so the only thing that I know to say is it's just his breed.

And asking for no rude answers, is like asking the pope not to pray. lol It ain't gonna happen!! I've tried it plenty of times, and only succeeded once. People don't care, and they think they know it all, so they can be rude about their answers.

Anyways, fixing the dog, is the only way to keep him from howling. My dog WILL NOT bark inside, but when the neighborhood dog is put outside, he howls. It's actually kind of cute lol. So I doubt training would help much. It might, but I doubt it. Getting him fixed will also keep him from marking his territory as often, not peeing, aggression, it can make them more protective or make them lazier. It's better all around for an animal to get fixed, even though it's not natural. But it's not natural for humans to get fixed either, but we do it for different reasons. Some do at least.

And not having him fixed, doesn't make you irrisponsible. My dog is almost 4 yrs old, and isn't fixed yet. We just havent' had the money to take him. If you keep an eye on him, and make sure he doesnt' impregnate a female, then you're being responsible. Now, if your dog knocked up all the local females, then yea, that would irrisponsible of you not to get him fixed. But if he's only gotten to a couple, then that's ok. That just means that you can no longer control him, and need him to be fixed. Trust me! I'm going through the same thing. My dog gets outside, without me(not anyone else, just me! lol) then he runs off, to the house where the fem dog is at. And he'll try to get in the house, or try to mount her. It isn't my fault, I'm not there to keep control of him. But it is my fault, because I havent' had him fixed.

Is he a breeding dog? If so, then there's nothing you can do about it, but listen to it. You can try some basic household training, like not barking, but I don't think it'll help much, seeing how he's howling for a female. Sorry to say, but unless he's a stud, then the only other option you hae is listen to his howling, or get him fixed. And I'm not trying to be rude or anything.
Or you could always get a stuffed animal the same size as him, and rough him up with it, and let him mount that. I know it sounds nasty, but it can keep him under better control. I don't think that it will totally silence him, but it can help a little, also.

Good luck to you! And I hope I helped out!

Your poor hound is responding to the phermones given off by the female. They are what causes "attraction" between animals; some believe that humans are attracted to each other based on particular phermones. Phermones produce certain "scents" that cause this attraction. I am unaware of anything that will stop phermones from being produced in the body since they are a chemical, but maybe a veterinarian or other animal expert will be able to help you out.

Yes. Neuter or spay. Or breed.

(Not being rude, just answering the question)

Human piss is the best it really buggers up the smell hormone that the dogs are responding to.
