By the time that you would be able to see it with a visual check, the tooth would most likely need a root canal and crown or it would need to be extracted. Go to the dentist.

You can do a visual inspection and feel with your tongue. By that time it may be big, you might require a root canal, but not necessarily. It depends on how big/deep the cavity is. This is a very poor method of dental screening and it will likely result in premature loss of all your teeth.

X-rays can detect little cavities in between your teeth that we can't see. It is very important to see your dentist on a regular basis.

If you can feel a little hole in it then you probably have a cavity.
