I wrote this long answer that was similar to what Dilla wrote, but then I realized that it's much simpler than that.

People in these forums have two things: Power and Anonymity. If our profiles required that we put our name and address down, you would see a lot less abuse on here. People hide behind their screen names and feel that they can say and do whatever they want. Then Yahoo gives them the power to rate peoples answers and pick their favorites. Some people even stoop to creating multiple accounts just to boost their own ratings and put others down.

Quite sad really from what should be the most respectable forum in Answers.

I think the problem is that people believe that their instructor/sensei/master is the ultimate source regarding martial arts. And if there is a different opinion that doesn't conform to what they were taught, they automatically reject it without trying to understand. I'm sure their instructor is a great martial artist, and can kick butt, but the students don't realize that martial arts is very broad, and that there are many different opinions.

As to the thumbs, that is exactly what they were intended for, up to show you agree, and down when you think it's a bad answer. But your point is well taken, people, especially in the martial arts section give the thumbs down much too readily. I come here for fun, to learn some new things, get different opinions, and share my knowledge/experience whenever I feel qualified. I don't understand why people come here looking only for other people to agree with them, what's the point.

Because people don't like to have thier "sacred cows" trampled or questioned.

Such sacred cows often involve:
1- Bruce lee and other martial artists who people base thier opinions on thier actual talent on thier hollywood film careers.

2- spirituality in the martial arts.
Many people are sold a bill of goods about martial arts bieng about "spirituality" and discipline, discipline comes from the family and upbrining, it is not a martial arts teachers job to teach you how to act. There is no lighting incense or preying that will make you a good fighter.

3- "your style sucks"- obviously this is an offensive comment to someone as it is telling them they have wasted thier time and been lied to. This is an offensive comment that is not true, because even a so called "poor" style that has a bad rep like CMAs or TKD, if trained properly with resistance against a resisting opponent is better than a so called "better" style that doesn't. It is all in the training methods.

4- While true that there is the "internet" problem of being able to hide behind a computer, there are websites that say "put up or shut up" like www.bullshido.net where the frauds, chi masters and people with wild stories are called out and ignored.
They have a forum where people in different regions can and do show up to cross-train with each other so you have a better idea that people who are going to eventually show up and be seen in person.

These are some general reasons.

The people who feel that they are having thier sacred cows trampled on are giving thumbs down to the people who are spouting truth, and people who are spouting truth don't like to hear wishy washy unsubstantiated bull crap.

There is only one way to test or "talk" about martial arts and that is to play with each other with hands. Talking and theorizing about "points" can never be proven in martial arts unless it is tested. The only way to test it is by training/playing with someone to show what you are talking about.

I like this question. There was a similar one a few weeks ago. I agree with you guys. But on my part I try to answer to the best of my ability with the truth. If I dont know, I just don't answer or say I don't know. If people give me a thumbs down I really could not care less. I am here because I think I can help. I treat everybody with respect and expect the same back but I will not lower myself to others level of stupidity.

outdoors of toddlers and those with out any understanding or adventure, all of it comes all the way down to ego. there are various in this website who declare to be "masters" yet are unwilling to verify or settle for any answer it particularly is fairly distinctive than what they suspect. top or incorrect does not make a difference to those adult males and regrettably some are surprising individuals. for my area I even have discovered some issues from this dialogue board even though it has additionally strengthened that familiar opinion or the internal maximum bias of a few nevertheless generally wins out over reality. Thumbs up, thumbs down, or surprising contributor status does no longer get rid of ones ego. I attempt to no longer fall into a similar attitude yet now and returned I capture myself. So we are all in charge yet to what volume we enable it impact us is the place the subject is.

its because everyone has different opinions abt martial arts. and some people are too stupid and arrogant to accept those views. the rest, ppl here are just pure rude. such a shame to the martial arts section. as a martial artist, im ashamed by all this rudeness. didnt martial arts teach us self control? and respect to others? so lets stop all this bad energy and preserve the pure meaning of learning martial arts.

I wondered the same thing. I think some people are so set in their ways that if they see something counter to their thought process.... down goes the thumb.

People only want to see the answers they agree with. It must be a feeling of power being able to grade someone's answer without any risk of confrontation. Pretty cowardly.
