say hello... or the day greating... good morning, good afternoon... etc.
You dont have to speak if you dont want to.
Maybe the other person will say something.
If you take the lift frequently, make a game of it... see who answers and what gets a good response.

I don't ride lifts, I ride elevators ;-)
It's really odd, isn't it, how a bunch of normally talkative people suddenly get self-conscious and quiet when you stuff a few of them in a small enclosed space? A very interesting psychological phenomenon...
You're not alone. The vast majority of people just push the button for their floor and stare at the floor indicators. It's fun sometimes, if you're in one with 3 or 4 people, to ignore convention and just start asking them, "How are you doing today? Isn't this a nice day? What did you do this weekend?" etc. Most people are very uncomfortable answering, even though if you ask them the same questions outside the lift, they'll have no problem talking to you.
Humans are strange animals...:)

A greeting is more than sufficient, if you really are dying to make inane banter talk about the weather, there is always something to be said about the weather.

I never say anything more. Occasionally, if I am closer to the buttons I will ask which floor. Most often, other people will be lucky to get more than a nod from me.

Well, if you lived in America, you would either not say anything or comment on the weather. However, you could do something like Ellen DeGeneres (sp?) suggests:
"First day of parole."
"Hey, wanna smell something weird?"

i love gettin in a lift full of people and remain facing them and say something like "i suppose you are all wondering why i gathered you here today..."
or just say nothing at all and look at them looking at you...they get real uncomfortable...

dont say anything!!! if people are so ******' insecure, they need every stranger to recognize and acknowledge them---- then that IS their PROBLEM, not yours. OK????? of course, if U are interested, then by all means, go ahead and make a fool out of your self. been there, and learned, i hope.
