Why does my body keep a 12-hour time-released medication but expel other foods?

When I use the bathroom, doesn't the medication leave along with the foods I ate? How does something stay in the stomach for a long period of time while other things leave?

the waste that you expel has been there for 12-24 hours, just like the meds.
