First hand.
Everyone Ive rescued has been awesome.
I have had people dump their losers bloody and skin hanging on my porch. They will let me tend to their needs and show me affection but due to their treatment from others they could not be around other dogs. The amazement was how loving they were toward me right after being forced to fight.
I believe anyone who has given a pit a chance knows how wonderful they are. They are the perfect family dog and their need to be more laws in place to keep them as family members and not a piece of property

I have worked with this breed for different reasons. And I KNOW what this breed is capable of. I have been bitten 3 times (unprovoked), I have stopped attacks by Pits on kids and people just walking down the street. I have put several through Police Dog Training but not one of them could be trusted to do their job and failed the training.
There are so many things that triggers an attack that people don't think about. An child running after a ball, the running triggers an attack, as well a jogger, a biker. A movement that we would think is innocent could be seen by the Pit as an intition movement and will attack.
I have used a 2x4 to stop a pit attacking another dog. And then ust it to protect myself. I was able to knock the dog out and called animal control. It was picked up and euthanized.
It is quite apparent that I have just cause to dislike this breed. The reason we have so many problems with this breed is because of BYB'er. They are throwing out mentally ill dogs and that is were their reputation comes from. A competant breeder breeds using the Pedigree that comes with the dog so that they are not breeding in all the faults of the Breed. It used to be a good dog but thanks to stupid and ignorant BYB'ers this breed has gone way down hill.
I feel that every Pit Bull should be temperament tested. But if they did that a vast majority will be euthanized. It is that vast majority that we hear the terribe tales.
Having been a Police Officer with my Doberman at my side we worked as a team and knew exactly what the other would do under an given situation.

I beleive a pit is like any other dog, with the potential to be a violent beast or a loving friend. Can't explain why I fear them, though.
Went to a shelter recently and there was a female pit mix an a kennel. She just looked so sad and I wanted to comfort her the best I could through the bars, but when I put my hand on the outside of her crate and she went to sniff me I had this absolutely uncontrollable urge to jump back. I felt horrible for my reaction because I knew she meant no harm, but I couldn't make it better because I knew it would just happen again.
Maybe it's a mixture of media and upbringing. The media influenced my parents, and my parents brought me up with that fear. I've never actually seen a pit behave any more aggresively than my dog *chihuahua terrier mix, whatever that really means* but even though my dog NEVER bites, I expect the pit to go through with it.
I think for some, no matter what they KNOW, they will allways be a little afraid. Nothing can be done, I guess.

I am a pitbull lover, based on the pitbulls I've met and worked with. The dog that got me into training was an Akita/Pit mix. I have a little pittie that is my Agility dog.
I've also had lots of pits in my classes over the years and found them very bright, sensitive and eager to learn.
There are several pits and pit mixes that come to dog day care at my facility.

I am not a pit bull fan, but I wouldn't say that I'm a hater. I base my judgment on experience. A good friend of mine had a loveable, gentle, sweet pitbull. She was well trained and never misbehaved. A wonderful dog. And one day the pitbull attacked her six-year old daughter without any provocation from the girl. After that, I just don't trust pitbulls; though I could care less if other people choose to.

I have a pit/lab mix now, my boyfriend was rooming with an owner of 2 pits, and my friend owns 5 pits. Every one of them would defend their owner if need be(as all dogs would), but they ALL are loving, nice, submissive, fun dogs. My dog is one of the best in the neighborhood (I've been told by neighbors). Not a single one has ever bitten ANYONE and most always do what they are told. They are my breed of choice.

I think pits are great dogs and this comes from experience and lots of time working with animals. I have been around many different breeds of dogs, grew up around pits and worked with animals for many years. If I had to group the aggression that I have seen in dogs by breeds, the pit would be one of the breeds at the bottom, with chows, akitas and cocker spaniels( sounds crazy but true) at the top.

Due to imbreeding, pit bulls are supposed to be the meanest, baddest, and vicious dogs. BUT>>>every akc approved and licensed dog is imbred. FACE IT> boxers are imbred, how do you think we have the blood lines??? there had to be 2 dogs that started it, we just have branched off. Pit bulls are the same. BUT, they are usually raised in poverty stricken areas and probably are a lot closer bred than other breeds. This gives them genetic problems and issues. There are other dogs that in their nature they are mean too. Shiba Inu's, Dobermans, Chow Chows, and Pitbulls are given a bad name. I think that this is the owners fault by having the dog not socialize with other people and canines. Hey, face it... People are just like pitbulls. Either you are raised to be outgoing, or not. True???? LOL...just a thought to ponder. But This is a logical explanation, right???

we have a 3yr old pit/lab mix, he is the greatest dog I have ever owned, we rescued him as a puppy from a shelter. He is very mellow and sweet, when he does get playful and excited he is pretty powerful, but he would never intentionally hurt anyone, he is even great with our baby niece!
People are too hard on pit bulls, it depends on how they were raised, ANY dog has the potential to be mean no matter what breed it is, it all depends on how they are raised and trained.

I've seen both sides of Am Staffs. My daughter has one that is now 5 yrs old, and just as sweet as can be. Loves to run along side the horses when they're riding, shares his corner of the living room with a cat. He was raised as a part of the family from 8 wks on.
On the flip side of that.. one of my husbands co-workers has one that is 3 yrs old and most of the time he is crated or on a chain. He will go after anyone that does not reside in the home. He's killed their daughter's horse, one of their doxies, 4 goats and eliminated all the cats from the property.
