In the open. They were mostly slaves of the Romans until many of the soldiers converted. Then they were everywhere in the nation.
When they went into hiding, they went into the catacombs. But many were killed, esp. in the Coloseum in animal fights, and by the gladiators.
It was a Christian who ended the gladiator fights by running onto the field when he saw the fights begin, begging the gladiators not to kill one another in the name of Jesus Christ. When they slaughtered him, the people in the stands were shocked and shamed into leaving, and the fights never resumed.

They didn't hide. They willingly volunteered themselves for execution because they thought the only way to get to heaven was to be martyred. Sounds familiar, huh? Religion = Stupidity.

Many of them hid underground where they held services and buried their dead. Otherwise, they scattered the countryside. And of those, they did not always openly profess their faith. Not all of them like the idea of ending up as lion turd.
