Beagles are such a popular breed, there's no shortage of them in shelters. Use petfinder. Also, search for web pages about beagles, like the national club. Find out what you'll be getting yourself into. They are hunting dogs, and they are vocal. You can't stiffle that instinct. Are you ready for it? Do you have neighbors? Do you have time to walk quickly or run with your dog every day? They are super high energy and need exercise or they will get into trouble. Also, have you raised a puppy before? Have you had a dog before? If not, get the book "Puppies for Dummies" and find out what to expect, you might decide you'd rather get a dog who already house trained and mellowed out a bit. Consider whether you have a fenced in yard or a convenient fenced in dog park where you can let your dog off leash. I thought I could get away with not having a fenced in yard, three months later, I'm saving my money to put in a fence in the spring :) And driving 35 minutes each way on weekends to go to a dog park. And finally consider not just the initial cost of obtaining the dog, but the cost of feeding, vet care, vaccines, neuter surgery, emergency surgeries, toys, chew toys, collars, crates, leashes, shampoos, cleaning supplies etc ... Puppies cost more their first year than adults. Average around $2,000 a year when you consider everything, that's after the purchase price of the dog. People almost always underestimate the cost of responsible dog ownership because they really want a dog. Just go into it with your eyes wide open. The relationship with a dog is far more rewarding when it isn't a terrible hardship for you.

You'll want to do some research on breeders before you purchase your puppy. This is very important. Develop a list of questions to ask the breeders and don't settle until you find a breeder you connect with. If you have friends that own a Beagle, ask them where they purchased their dog. Contact the local Beagle club in your area, etc.

Do a Google search on Beagle rescue. There are lots listed. Contact one. I did a search like this for one of our rescued dogs. I just did a search on No Kill Shelters NJ, and came up with a page full of references. Contact one of them. But let me tell you, beagles don't turn up a lot in shelters because they are very popular. Keep an open mind, and give a dog a new lease on life.

I highly encourage you to go the adoption/shelter route. There will be plenty of beagle mixes. There are so many dogs needing adoption and you will find a devoted friend for life. My wife and I adopted two dogs 3 years ago (a beagle and a beagle lab mix).

The only cost will be the cost for spaying and a small fee (of course anything you want to donate to the shelter as well).

Good luck! Dogs are great!

I believe pet finders.com is a nation source for dog as well as people who rescue a particular breed. Also ASPCA is another good bet. The local humane society is connected to other sites as well. daria r

Put in your zipcode, and that you want a beagle, and off you go!

Remember, though, at shelters you may not find the exact type of dog you are looking for. You may want to go to a beagle rescue if you are adamant about wanting that breed.

You dont buy puppies at a shelter, you adopt them for a adoption fee. You can try petfinder online where many shelters post adoptable pets.
