So I know at first there was adam and eve, and then they had two sons. So how did the rest of the human population come about? Did Cain or Abel have children with their mother? After all she was the only woman around, right?

I answered this question a month back too. The linage was carried on by Seth. Adam and Eve had other children too and they would have married their sisters and/ or nieces. Sounds awful but the current reality of that time sanctioned it. The genetic pool was not corrupted hence there were no abnormalities. Also the law of incest did not come into being untill the Book of Exodus. I think it is the book of Lev.

Genesis 4:17 says, "Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch." Who was his wife? It is implied in the biblical text that Cain married one of his sisters. Several facts lead us to this conclusion.
First, it is clear that Adam and Eve had a number of children. Genesis 5:4 says, "After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters." Since Adam and Eve were the first man and woman, and since God had commanded them (and their descendants) to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28), it seems reasonable to conclude that Cain married one of his many sisters. It is also possible that he married a niece or even a grandniece.
One must keep in mind that in the early years of the human race there were no genetic defects that had yet developed as a result of the fall of man. By the time of Abraham, God had not yet declared this kind of marriage to be contrary to His will (see Genesis 20:12). Laws governing incest apparently did not become enacted until the time of Moses (Lev 18:7-17; 20:11,12,14,17,20,21). Hence, there was no prohibition regarding marrying a sister (or niece or grandniece) in the days of Cain.

adam and eve had many more sons and daughters after cain and abel, the only one named in the Bible being seth (all of this is written in there, just read farther on down the page). inbreeding at the time didnt produce the undesired effects as it does today, because in the beginning the gene pool was pure and untainted; breathed directly from God. besides, adam technically married his own rib.

the bible did not list the genealogy of women so adam an eve probably had many sons and daughters during their hundereds of years of living so probably a daughter of eve.

Given that we do not know the timespan of how long Adam and Eve were in the garden,it is possible that God created other humans after them but these were not chosen as Adam and Eve were to be close to God,if so then when they were put out of the garden they may well have went to live with these others.

it says in Genesis 5, that Adam lived 800 years and begat many sons and daughters. There's where the population starts.

Hello claireybe... :)

Genesis 5

1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

2 male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called "THEIR" name Adam, in the day when they were created.

The word being their name..so God made more than one man and woman..though, we only read about one man and woman who were created first.. :)

In Jesus Most Precious Name..
With Love..In Christ.. :)
