I work as a costumer service clerk. The other day I said to a client "you should pay a thousand more" (referring that he sould pay a thousand dollars more) and he corrected me sayind that the way to say was "one more thousand". Was I wrong??

Bless your heart......you have one of the toughest jobs in the world! Dealing with people as a customer service clerk is a pain in the butt....case, in point! You were right....he was wrong! No matter how tough they get, always believe in yourself! Keep up the good work!!

Not really. Sounds like you just had a difficult customer, so don't stress about it. Either way was acceptable, but you know the saying, "the customer is always right".

one thousand more is the correct way of saying that. people butcher the language a whole lot worse than you did. i certainly wouldn't give it another thought.

Your grammar was 'fine', my dear, since you were speaking 'colloquially' (that's 'street talk' for all of us) ... and the customer was wrong because the 'one' goes with the 'thousand' and TOGETHER they modify the word 'more' and they should not be 'divided' the way he did.

"One more thousand" is the correct one but there is no problem if u say "a thousand more"

The word "a" is synonymous with a single entity so he is being overly corrective. You were not wrong.

not wrong! only the interpretation and understanding of the recipient is wrong!using "a" is very definite article for his understanding!
