If you have a US passport, you do NOT need a visa to arrive in Italy (or any of the other EU countries, Switzerland, United Kingdom, etc.). You will obviously need your passport.

If you are asking if you have to have a return ticket as a condition of entry into the country, the answer is NO. They do not monitor your travel plans but there are limits as to how long you can stay and whether or not you can work. Situations like that require various permits/visas.

What the first answerer says about the price of one-way tickets is not true. In the past, there were times that a round-trip was cheaper than one-way, but that was before many things in the air travel industry changed. Just yesterday I saw that Air France had one-way tickets on sale from Houston to Milano for less than $300 ($255? can't remember the exact price). If you want to fly round-trip, just double the one-way fare, in this instance. There are hundreds of travel sites to find the best ticket. I'd like to tell you that one will get you the lowest price every time, but it doesn't exist. Various sites have the lowest fares at various times and various city pairs. Google on "cheap airline tickets europe" and you will get a lot of sites. Try your dates and places on several different sites and you will get a feel for the prices available. They change everyday or even more often that that, so keep playing with it. You really want the sites that compare all of the other sites and give you compiled results. You'll know which ones do that as you use them.

Patience will save you hundreds of $$!

Buon Viaggio!
