Has anyone ever heard of a case where a small dog has been hunted by some kind of bird of prey such as a hawk or an eagle?? I'm just wondering whether or not its ok to put my dog in the yard if there are hawks or owls around...

My dog is 1lb 6oz....7.5 months

Oh.. He is paper trained, but we have 3 other dogs that we let roam the yard as they please, and our little one always wants to go with them. He is never alone out there with supervision, but I was just curious of this occuring..

okay first off yes hawks and other birds of prey will attack and carry your dog off . I live in fla and I have seen these birds all the time around our neighborhood and in our local parks . you must under no circumstances ever leave your tiny dog unattended it just takes a matter of seconds for that bird to have your dog . Also there was an incident back home where my mom lives that a 10 yr old boy fought off a red tailed hawk trying to steal his dog . The boy looked like he has been hit by a mac truck this kid had cuts and bruises everywhere . the dog did not get taken thank god because of that kid . Never put your dog in the yard unattended. My chi is 3 lbs and I would never put him in the yard unattended. good luck to you.

Have you ever heard of better safe than sorry? There is always that chance that those types of birds will not notice your little one while he is out there...but there is always the chance they will. Make sure if you let him out that you are with him....or someone old enough to kind of keep an eye out.
Someone else recommended a kennel with a mesh top...that would also be worth looking into if you can't be outside with him all the time.

For such a small dog...you might consider paper training with peepads if you can't be outside with him and a covered kennel aren't possible.

Yes! Birds of prey can and do attack small dogs. My cousin's chihuahua was once badly damaged when a hawk swooped at it, but was able to be saved by the veterinarian.

Please, do not let your little one go out alone! The chihuahua was almost 6 pounds, so I wouldn't want to imagine what would happen to your dog!

YES. YES. YES. They will not just attack, they are capable of catching and eating your dog.

Until we moved to suburbia my kid had never seen a squirrel because the birds of prey ate them where we used to live. If a bird can snatch up a squirrel it will definitely take your dog.

An owl or hawk will not realize they thing on the ground is a dog and they won't care. To them it will be lunch.

Even if there are no birds around, if you live where there is any other wildlife on the ground you absolutely cannot let the dog out unescorted. Our neighbors lost a few cats way bigger than 2 pounds to a local member of the weasel family.

Peace

This is just a teeny bit on the funny side. I mean, think about it. A natural hunter, is being hunted. lol Ok, sorry. I'm done with that.

If an animal is the same size or smaller then the bird, then yes, the bird will attack it. There's nothing you can do about it, but you can prevent it.
1. Don't leave your dog alone outside.
2. Find a way to feed the birds before you take your dog outside. If they see you trying to protect him, they're liable to attack you too!
3. Have a safe place that only your dog can get to, in case of an attack. LIke a small opening under your house, or porch. A dog house, a crate, a doggie door. Anything that's big enough for your dog, but to small for the bird to get into.

I wouldn't worry to much about your dog not getting away. Small dogs are fast, and they manuver easily. So if they safe place isn't to far, they can get away easily. If it's on the other side of the yard, I would go after the bird with something hard; a broom, a mop, lol your tv. Anything large and hard. Yes, you will have to hit the bird, but birds aren't as fragile as everyone thinks they are. Just don't hit it hard in the wings. The feathers on the wings would be fine, just not the bone.
You could always make some tubes going around your yard, so the dog can have somewhere to be. It's a great mind challenge for the dog anyway. So by making an obsitcle course full of tubes, you're keeping your dog safe, and keeping his mind sharp!

I wish you the best of luck! I couldn't imagine losing a dog to a bird. Even one of prey!

Yes hawks will attack a small dog. Your dog is a tasty meal size so I would be very careful of leaving the dog unattended when the hawk or owls are out. I am not too sure if an owl would attack but they do eat meat so probably.

Yes, large birds of prey can and do catch small dogs like a chihuahua. It happens when dogs are left outside unsupervised.

Several years ago and tourist had her chihuahua taken by an eagle. One of our clients lost her Schipperke to an Owl.

No, do not let your dog out when their are large birds of prey around. They can and will take small dogs and cats and eat them.

Yes, they do. You should keep a close eye on your dog when it's outside. I have a small dog too and the vet said not to leave her unattended because those types of birds think these little dogs are food.

Birds of prey probably dont recognize individual animal species, "just small, furry and tasty". Get your dog a kennel with a mesh or chain link fence roof. She'll be safe, and have access to the outdoors.
