I have a Toshiba DVD recorder and I need a lesson in buying the right disc. DVD-RAM? DVD-R? DVD+R? Also, are these the same discs used to record data on pc's?

DVD-R and DVD+R are record ONCE disks. They CAN typically be used in most computer DVD drives. They are the cheapest in the marketplace. You can erase them (it really just deletes the table of content file), but that won't allow you to put any new material on them. I guess this is to make sure your neighbors can't view your data without a lot of extra work.

DVD-RAM can be re-recorded many times and usually offers more playback control than other disks in a DVD recorder. For instance, DVD-RAM often lets you view the start of the recording while you are still recording the program (great for catching up on the start of a game). You can erase some or all of the disk using the chapters on the recording. They typically CANNOT be used in computer DVD drives. The DVD-RAM disks are much more expensive than DVD+R and DVD-R disks.

DVD-RW and DVD+RW are re-recordable disks, too, but they usually aren't as flexible as the DVD-RAM disks. Often, you can't view the start of a recording and often you have to erase the whole disk or program, not just a part of the disk. Usually, they CAN be used in computer DVD drives. They are usually priced less than the DVD-RAM but more than the DVD-R, +R disks.

Of course, you'll have to check your computer manual to see what disks it will take and match those up with what your DVD recorder can take to find out the best choices for you.

the difference b/n -r and +r is not much. Its like VHS and beta a bit. Some will only work with one type of machine or burner. Its just the way the laser burns the disc. This mainly depends on what brand of electronics you have - like toshiba (which invented the dvd player) or Sony etc.
-+ RW means re-writable.Basically means you can add items to a disc or just start again and wipe it. Handy for documents. It\f you want to keep something like photos, music o r movies, go the R.
Check which one you comp. can use, usually written on the front of tray. Sometimes you can even use both.

DVD RW is dvd rewriteable. in simple terms like CDRW. you may erase the dvd once you're achieved and reuse it. i've got confidence +r is greater helpful to apply for video clips yet -r is fantastic to apply and became greater fee-effective than the +r while the formats have been incredibly new. the reason of teh 2 formats became alongside the lines of an identical concern while VHS and BETA have been out. fortunately, they created burners that labored with each thing. for my section i think of there are greater dvd gamers that play dvd -r and as a result that's what i take advantage of. wish this facilitates. Now there is Blu Ray and HD dvds popping out. back, 2 diverse formats, so there will be a conflict on which will win. in simple terms wait and ssee.

If I listened to my hubby right. The ones that are dvd-R are the ones that are able to be recorded on. But I know that you can only use them 1 time. DVD+R are the ones that can be used more than one time. I would assume that dvd Ram ones are only for the computer? We have a dvd/vcr that you can burn disks on and we use the dvd+R. Hope that helped.

Depends on what your manual says it can record on.

Not much difference anymore with + and - R's.
