Hello.. I'm hosting a murder mystery party based on a steam train in the 1920's. I'm after station noises ( whistles flag men etc ) plus the sounds of a steam train ( as if in a carriage on a jouney ). Been to the library and no joy. any help appreciated.

As a child all the time. Started a love affair with trains that has never ended. I loved the smell , the noises - the chugging of the wheels made words, fish an' chips, ham an' eggs, gotta go etc (say them to yourself without a pause between the words and get the feeling of the sound) as the speed altered or we went down an incline. I can still conjure up the smell at will and all the smut and flakes coming in the window just added to the magic. The train down to Weymouth used to pass through the town and to a child seeing the town and the holiday makers through the carriage windows after hours of fields and cows etc was the best part of the journey. Nothing can ever comes close.....

Argo Transacord made numerous recordings of railway sounds. I've just done a quick search and there are quite a number offered for sale on ebay.

There is a chat forum for rail staff which is visited a lot by enthusiasts as well as staff. Register with the site then ask the same question, most of them on there are very helpful and if they can help you they certainly will.

So..
Here http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=416 you can find my favourite site about train models. If you are a beginner consider buying their ebook with a step by step guide to plan and build your first model railroad.

Saw a CD of train sound efects in the local library (Springfield, Kent)
Try asking your library and searching their catalogue of CDs.
Most libraries also do inter-loans so they can probably borrow it for you. :)

Well now, buy a cheap video or dvd and edit all the sounds
you want! Easy-peasy!
