everyone knows that in the Bible God slapped around His prophets quite a bit...ie. Jonah got thrown out of a boat, whale ate, shade dried up...Ezekeiel had to eat food over a dung fire, was tied up, had his tongue stuck to top of mouth.....Jeremiah was starving and thrown in a well....Daniel in lion's den...Shadrac, Meshak and Abendigo in the firey furance..Jesus was crucified...Peter was crucified upside down...Paul was stoned...John the Baptist was beheaded...any others you can think of?

Ok I didn't know Isaiah was sawn in half...it would seem that the benefits of being a real prophet is not all that is described as by rich false televangelical prophets today....ie poor widows please send them money as a seed so the widow can get rich. What a JOKE!!!

Jesus tells us at Matthew 23 that He would send prophets after His death:

34 Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, 35 that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

Verse 36 suggests the prophets Jesus sent would be manifest during the lifetimes of those with whom He was speaking. Even a casual reader of the writings of Paul and Peter will observe that they both had the gift of prophecy, in the spirit of the OT prophets.

Today's gift of prophecy is different, however. The NT prophet is given to the Body of Christ to encourage it, although rebuke is occasionally required. We are to test the "fruits" of anyone who claims to be a prophet (Matt. 7:15-20). If the prophet's "fruits" are failed prophesies, immoral living, attachment to wealth and power, etc., he or she is a false prophet and should be rebuked.

So why do these folks gain HUGE wealth? Two reasons:

1) Because folks with weak faith who are falling into apostacy want to hear what these false teachers and prophets say. Paul explains in 2 Timothy 4:3 "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables."

2) Because another characteristic of false teachers is greed. The Apostle Peter explains at 2 Peter 2:1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.

Your list of prophets should include Isaiah, who was sawn in half. The story of this can be found in a Jewish historical writing called "The Martyrdom of Isaiah." Isaiah's cause of death is behind the cryptic reference at Hebrews 11:37; also include Zechariah, who was stoned as a "false prophet" and "blasphemer." (See Jesus' reference in Matt. 23:35, above.)

It makes the people feel good to be able to say they gave their money to, what they thought, was a good charity. Surely these TV Evangelists wouldn't LIE *Gasp* or Deceive people and NOT really take care widows and orphans. *sarcasm* I know many people who have given purely for the fact it makes them feel better... they don't have to do anything else, as someone else is handling the money.

But you make an excellent point. All of those who have followed the Old Test God seemed to end up with a lot more bad going for them, than good. All of the prophets ended up in a bad way... Some by God's own hand.

They aren't prophets or messengers, they have an agenda to get rich from scaring little old ladies and little old men out of their life savings and their social security with the threat of going to hell if they don't give these monsters their money. Televangelists make me ill. My grandmother had a neighbor who was eating cat food, because some televangelist on tv said to send everything they could, so she didn't have enough left from her social security to buy food. God doesn't work like that.

Firstly all those you have mentioned suffered by the hands of Men and not God,as for televangelists I cringe when I hear most of them,It is a fact that these people make a good living out of the Gospel and money is their desire.

I'm not keen on televangelists.
I'm very much into the local church.

Yes, there has been a lot of suffering by God's servants. What we get in here is nowhere near persecution.
