We need to be here to gain the understandings we have come into the physical reality to realize. We can only do this if we stay focused on our true reality.

Our reality as spirit.

While we are still here on this Earth, we are in the world. To not be of it means to not desire worldly things. Easier said than done. I have a friend that has a lot of debt. She spends money like water, then complains that she has no money. By most standards, she is very well off. She drives a BMW. She has a home valued close to $800,000. She goes on extravagant vacations, at least twice a year. She has closets filled with shoes and clothing. Yet, she is miserable. The 'things' she has attained give instant gratification for a short time, then she is left with empty substance-less junk. She constantly worries about money. I know a couple that own very little. They live modestly. They have no debts. Their clothing is appropriate for work or whatever, but it's not all new, nor the latest in fashion. They are the happiest couple I know.

That, my friend, is the difference. The one desires the things of the world, and once attained finds them to be empty and valueless. The other desires relationships, with God and their family and friends. They are rich beyond measure.

Many have already said basically what I will say...but here goes anyway. The priorities of the "world" and the priorities of God seem to be increasingly different. We live in this world, but we do not have to follow the crowd when it comes to moral values, lifestyle choices, etc. We can be a positive force in our communities by standing for what we believe in and looking for ways to make the world a better place.

This means we are IN the world and we don;t have a choice about that now.

But we can remain detached from the world and the things that goes on in the world.

That;s just like being around an alcholic and not drinking. The bible states bad company corrupts useful habbits. Just because we live in this world we don't have to associate ourselves or get caught up in the evilness of it.

I don't know.

No offense, but people throughout history have dedicated entire lifetimes of deep study, effort, and practice to finding the answer to this question and learning how to apply it in their own lives.

What are the chances you're going to find what you're looking for in a few paragraphs on Yahoo Answers?

As propeht Muhammad taught (upon him be peace), we should behave as if we are strangers, or wayfarers in this world - just passing through. Do not become overyly connected/invested in the worldly. That doesn't mean not to fulfill your duties, do your job, care for your family, etc. Just that you can't become so obsessed with those things that they become your priority above your relationship with God.

Good question.
There is only one way not to be of the world, by sowing to your spirit. This is done by studying God's Word. Becoming full age or mature in His Word makes you spiritual and manifests God to you.
