54K before tax is not much. You cannot live lavishly. NY./NJ are quite expensive cities. Accommodation would be costly. Vehicle would be necessary in NJ and would cost lot of money annually in insurance alone. To begin with it is OK if you can cook at home. With experience you would get better jobs with better financial packages. Congratulations

North of Trenton or in the Philly area that is a decent salary for a single person, but the cost of living keeps that from being a spectaular wage. If you are below Trenton 54K is pretty good. The most important thing is housing and how far you'll have to commute.

Housing, car insurance and time spent commuting from affordable places to live to where the higher paying jobs usually are can take a lot out of that check. Then factor in taxes (7% sales tax) a single person can make do up north or actually have something to put in the bank down south.

How good or bad this salary is depends not only on your experience, but also on your education and the type of work you will be doing.
You can check the Occupatioal Outlook Handbook (OOH) - published by the US Department of Labor/Bureau of Labor Statistics for information about average salaries.
You can also check job hunting websites (like www.monster.com) to get an idea of the typical pay range for the type of work you will be doing. Most sites let you limit your search to a geographical region, so you can discover the average pay scale for your type of job in your area.
You can use the second site (below) to figure out how much you'll need to make to maintain your current lifestyle in your new location. Just enter your current salary and where you live. (Only for the US.)

That's $54K BEFORE taxes. You'll be lucky to clear $40K after taxes. The cost of living in New Jersey is very high. As an example, insurance for your automobile will cost you at least $2,000 a year. Does your benefit package pay the full cost of your health insurance or are you expected to pay part of the premium?

I'm not sure what this has to do with immigration but....
The cost of living is high in that area,so that's not a very good offer. If you were say in Indiana where the COL is much lower it wouldn't be bad.. In my city of Scottsdale(right outside of Phoenix,AZ) it wouldn't go very far at all.So it really depends on where you live.Plus to me living in that area, if its not my home, would not be to my liking .Too many people and far too cold lol
But to each his own.Good luck

you won't be able to buy any decent property in NJ on that salary ,,taxes and property value are through the roof, a crappy 1 bedroom apartment in the ghetto will run you 800 a month

When you adjust for the cost of living you are just slightly below average. I would find out what the cost or renting buying there would be. That will be your biggest factor.
