I just moved to the States and am changing status to become a Permanent Lawful Resident. I previously worked for a Police Force in the UK and want to stay in the Law Enforcement field. So far it has been my experience that almost all Federal, State and Metropolitan Police Forces here in the US require US Citizenship prior to making an application to be a Police Officer. There are some exceptions. The University of Kentucky Police do not require citizenship, just residency. And, you can also apply for non-Police Officer jobs within the Force without having to be a citizen first.

As far as I know, yes. I saw one UK citizen working for the LAPD on TV a couple of years back. Here in UK we've got at least one former American cop working for a UK force - he thinks we're soft on crime.
