Would a guitar amplifier work in Australia if it was bought from the US? (I have that power point thingy).

What is a power point thingy? If you mean a convertor, then yes, it will work, provided that all is up to spec.

I like the DigiTech Hardwire Metal Distortion. I have a solid state amp and it sounds pretty good on it. Back the gain off to about 1 o'clock and it gets nice and crunchy without that "frying bacon" noise some pedals get on the high end. It goes for $99 new. If you look around you can probably find a good deal on one on eBay. I got mine for $30 ($39 after shipping). A lot depends on exactly what amp you're using too. I'm using a Carvin SX200, which is probably the warmest sounding solid state amp I've ever heard. Not harsh and digital sounding like some of them out there.
