I'm not Jewish but you may want to check out the link below. This is from that site.

"Judaism does not prohibit writing the Name of God per se; it prohibits only erasing or defacing a Name of God. However, observant Jews avoid writing any Name of God casually because of the risk that the written Name might later be defaced, obliterated or destroyed accidentally or by one who does not know better."

It's true Hebrew did not use vowels. However, the Jews superstitiously stopped using the name of God, JHVH, (Jehovah in English...or YHWH - Yahweh in Hebrew)...whether they stopped "superstitiously" or because they felt it was too holy to say (even though it was used over 7,000 times in the bible and obviously meant to be said...) is up for debate. My guess (and it's just a guess) is that they omit the "o" for the same reasons above. Later today, I will research it and see if I'm right. :-)

Superstition. They feel that word is too holy to write. But God is not a name; it's a title.

The name of G-d is too holy to write. We know who we are referring to. We are not afraid----we are just showing respect.

Respect.

It is a misinterpretation of a few scriptures. He says "call on my name" How can we call on His name, when we don't know what it is? In some Languages "God" is a pagan name for their mighty one. See Ex.23:13. The Almighty's name is YHVH. the Savior's name is Yahoshua (it means YHVH is my Savior)

It is not a matter of being afraid but of being reverent towards GOD. It is a respect matter.

I am not Jewish but I have several Jewish friends and have worked for several jewish bosses.

It is simply because the Hebrew alpahabet does not have vowels. Y-W-H or J-V-H is pronounced as yaweh or Jehovah.

Perhaps because there were no vowels in the original Hebrew (which there weren't).
