We'd like to do an outerspace theme for him, but we don't want the walls and ceiling painted black. We were thinking about getting decals, or a wallpaper mural. But we're not sure, any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Paint one wall in a purple/blue. buy (or create by cutting a sponge) star shapes. Sponge paint stars on wall. Get a mobile that displays all of the planets and place in front of wall.

Also, at paint stores you can find glow in the dark paint. You can barely see it on a light colored wall and it glows when the lights are out. So with this trick you can paint stars all over without the burden of painting a black room.

I've added idea links below.

You could always opt for navy or a greyish blue color for the wall, and some places you can find stick ons that will peel away when he is through with this phase. It would be cool if you could find a local student (refrenced by the school) that would come in and paint some spacy things on the wall and ceiling. Kids deserve the best and if he truely wants outerspace, give it to him. I have done, western, sponge bob, winnie the pooh, and the last big venture was a fireman room, i really didn't want to splash those 4 coats of RED on the wall but i did. About 2 feet from the ceiling around the room, i painted white and of course went up on the ceiling with white, then took black paint and made spots, like on a dalmation. A yellow rain coat, with red suspenders, were cut into a valance. I bought fireman sheets and comforter and made some throw pillows, i even bought one of those red lights that spin. he loved it. Give into the theme, go all out, they are only little once.

My son loves space, too, and we've added a few things to his room to make it "space-ish" without going overboard. We did the ceiling stickers that glow in the dark, and we also bought some plastic glow-in-the-dark planets that you can hang in "orbits" around his light (which acts like the sun). They only use really tiny tacks to hang, so when you take them down it's not very noticeable. We put up a few framed space/rocket posters around his room, and my dad got him a moon from National Geographic for Christmas. The moon is really cool... it has a remote control so you can click through the phases (aka learn about waxing and waning), and you can make it into a nightlight, too.

If you put a couple of shelves in his room, you can always paint those any sort of color or add stencils to those, and they can be repainted when he changes his mind about his latest obsession. Books or model rockets or other space paraphernalia can be displayed on these shelves to add to the theme. I don't know what your budget is like, but sometimes finding a new, space-like bedspread and/or pillowcases can work very nicely, too.

New house, excited boy... have fun!!!

You don't need to paint the whole room black, just paint one wall in a dark blue and the other walls grey. Get those glow in the dark decals of stars to stick on the dark wall. You can make stars out of corrugated cardboard or foam core and hang them from the ceiling just using fishing wire and thumb tacks to hold them in place. On the other walls, put up shelving painted in the same dark blue as the wall and fill them up with anything having to do with outer space like a shuttle or aliens. If you are able to pain his furniture, I would use colours like silver and blue. Don't worry about going overboard, it works in kids rooms.

You could have someone come in and paint a small mural on the wall, or on the ceiling for that matter (you wouldnt have to do the whole ceiling). I would have someone paint a small mural above the headboard of his bed, that way when he grows out of it, or wants something else you can EASILY paint over it! Good Luck!

paint the ceiling black and put those glow in the dark stars all over it. They sell a solar system light fixture at toyrus or walmart and you can get that. I am sure they have bedding for that as well. if not buy some fabric at teh store and have someone make a set...bedding shouldn't cost much to have made. broswe sears, toysrus, walmart etc.. for things they have solar system. and be creative. Also do a google images search for solar system bedrooms...I am sure lots will come up. It woudl be really cool to do the whole room black with starts even on teh walls..but woudl be dark...LOL

My son wanted a space theme room too.
So, I got some flannel sheets that have stars and planets, the pillow case has stars that glow in the dark, I got a bed spread that has stars and planets on it, I put up a planetary mobile, that I painted with glow-in-the dark paint, I got the glow in the dark stars and planets for his walls and ceiling, I got one of those "kites" that is blue, yellow and white and has stars on it and hung it up like a shooting star and I painted his room blue. I also hung in his window the IKEA stars lights for a night light.
Lots of fun stuff out there, check with Home depot and Sears, Walmart, too.

If you want to have some real fun do one wall section with a magnetic primer (available at crafts or big hardware stores) and get a bunch of flat magnets of stars planets space ships and such that he can rearrange to make his own pictures and stories....

hmmm, actually if you don't want black walls, why not use that or another method to paint a couple of "windows" in his room into outer space? Make his room his little space ship?

You can buy sheets & comforters with outerspace themes!! What I have seen of them, they are in BLUE; instead of black!!! You can easily buy blue paint to match. Then go to the dollar store & buy decals of stars (they now sell them)!! You can also buy a rug to match, if you'd like!!
