She might be "scooting" or scratching her bum and marking her territory. You probably won't notice the smell but another cat would.

Well a few things come to mind.
Is the cat spayed?
If not she may be going into heat.
It's possible that she may have worms, they will scoot their butts across the floor when that is the problem
Her anal gland maybe blocked.
She may be trying to get excess poop off of her backside.

In any case it's best to take kitty to the Vet and have the problem checked out.
If she's not spayed you really should have that done.

If it's worms the Vet will be able to tell you what kind of worms and give you the right medication and dosage for your cats age and weight...DO NOT use over the counter wormer!

Lastly if it is her anal gland the Vet will have to unblock it...nothing major one of my cats had to have hers unblocked...takes about 5 seconds...gross but the Vet has to insert a finger into the anus to unblock it.

Good luck

Guess what? Chances are pretty good that your cat, if not spayed, is in heat! The behaviour you're witnessing is her trying to attract a male. Don't feel bad, my girlfriend called the vet at 3 AM because she thought her cat was in pain and dying! This can start as early as 4 months but generally around 9 to 10 months. She's probably not of the Siamese or similar type or she'd meowing and howling at the top of her lungs! This is really annoying at 3 AM (ask my husband who called the vet in the morning and said "you have to fix her TODAY or she's going outside tonight).
Cats have scent glands located around their bodies, so I'd bet she's rubbing her bottom to "mark" her presence. These glands can sometimes become blocked and are best dealt with by the vet who will unblock them. Since, by the sound of it, your cat has done this before and its resolved itself, I'd guess she is not spayed. The action with her paws is called treading or kneading. A kitten starts this almost as soon as they're born to stimulate milk flow from their mother's nipples. Some cats tread or knead on their owners especially when they're happy and content. This behaviour is especially nice if you can get her to "massage" your neck after a long day at work! They also have glands on their faces which is why a cat will rub their faces, more specifically their cheeks on an area (like you) marking their "territory". To put things in perspective, people have 5 to 20 million scent-analyzing cells lining their noses, your cat has about 67 million. (The bloodhound, "king" of scenting pets has 300 million!) Cats usually go into heat around the breeding season from October until late spring although especially indoor cats who are not so affected by changes in temperature, can go through this every 3 to 4 weeks. Since it's happened before and resolved itself I'd bet it's not worms (although she should be dewormed with a liquid available through your vet (I have my cats done yearly when they have their vaccinations). You can also get deworming medication from a reputable pet store if you feel confident in adminstering it yourself (it's a liquid that you squirt in her mouth), make sure she swallows it and that it's fresh. Almost all kittens will have worms of one sort or another (can be picked up from their mothers, but a kitten can be dewormed as young as 4 weeks of age). Some worms are visable in their stool, some not.
Be careful your cat doesn't scoot outside, especially when in heat or chances are good that in 63-65 days you'll become a multiple cat owner! If not neutered, cats will travel further from home.
Female cats sometimes will also spray (not as strong as male urine) during the time she is in heat or when pregnant, usually marking their "territory" either to attract a male or marking where they intend to have their kittens.
The solution is simple, have her spayed. It's more expensive to have a female spayed than a male neatered but be a responsible pet owner and have this done before she gets pregnant. It also cost more to have a female who has had previous litter(s) to be spayed. I've found a neutered cat to be more socialable and generally more content.
XOXOXO from my cats to yours...(despite what your friends say, I promise she won't get pregnant over the net!)
Hope this helps! Isn't this site great! Thanks Yahoo!

Scooting could be to get poop off her backside, my cat's do this if they feel something back there (is she leaving anything on the floor?), she could also have worms in which case she needs a quick trip to the vet for dewormer, don't use the stuff you get at the store. I haven't heard of cats doing this to mark territory before, but I guess it's possible.

Given she is a female cat it is more likely to have something to do with worms/constipation. Check what you are feeding her, ensure she is wormed regularly and if it persists take her to the Vet.
Queens (female cats) on heat have very definate behaviours and will do anything to get out there.
This behaviour indicates an intestinal problem, does she have plenty of fresh water, variety of diet, raw chicken necks/wings, dry food, access to grass?
Females who have been desexed are less likely to 'spray' than males. The smell of females does not have the stong odour of males and is less likely to be noticed.

Hi there...if your cat hasn't been spayed she may be exhibiting symptoms of coming into heat. Cats become sexually mature over the ages of 5-7 months. Female cats can spray, however it isn't as commonly seen with cats who reach sexual maturity. Spraying is to mark territory to let other cats know she is receptive to being mated. Female cats who spray: http://home.ivillage.com/pets/cats/0,,2j1z,00.html

It's important to spay soon as each time a cat goes into heat it increases her risk for mammary, uterine, ovarian cancer. Spaying eliminates these potential risks. See Benefits of Spaying: http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/why_you_should_spay_or_neuter_your_pet.html

Most animal shelters worldwide will offer low fee (even free to qualifying low income recipients) spay/neuter services. If you are located in the USA you can ring 1-800 SPAY USA to locate a nearby participating shelter. Other free/low fee spay centres in the USA: http://www.petsandanimals.org/spayneuter_services.html
