I wouldn't put it quite a bluntly as TomTom. Canon and Nikon models don't compete head to head - rather, their models leapfrog each other in terms of price and performance. But I do freely admit that Nikon doesn't have anything to compete with Canon's flagship model, the 1Ds Mk ll. Not at the moment.
So, on to your question.
The 400D is indeed the best camera in it's price range. It costs just $645 (without lenses), which is great value for money. For a bit less, you could get a Nikon D40/ D50 or a Pentax K100D/ K110D, and for a bit more you could get a Sony A100, but the Canon 400D is better than all of these. In order to beat the 400D, you'd have to spend $949 for a Nikon D80.
My only two reservations are:
* The Canon 400D is a tiny camera. You'd better like this - or at least be prepared to live with it. Play around with the 400D in a camera shop for a while. Compare it to the handeling of a Nikon D50. (If the D50 feels a lot better, get the Nikon. The Canon 400D isn't THAT much better.)
* The 18-55mm kit lens for the 400D is very disapointing. If you can afford a bit more, get a decent zoom! The $500 Canon 17-85mm would be a fantastic choice.

you should be very worried, oil and gas impacts each little thing. it is no longer purely the gas we put in our automobiles, it is each and each of the products we use. If it is no longer produced from oil (plastics) that is presented through trucks. we want to be louder than the environmentalists, e-mail, call or write your Congress. My wager will be that communities like eco-friendly Peace and WWF and others are being funded through OPEC. it isn't the fault of oil organizations, they have countless the bottom percentage for revenue about 8.2%. The media are touting record revenue purely because they're a international wide corporation and promote a lot oil. Coke or Microsoft has double the revenue. also there is no longer a small crew of human beings getting wealthy, it is the common American that revenue at the same time as they do. they're held through purely about each body who has a retirement fund.
