Others have said it well. Find out risks involved with the region, or at least know the region and then off to clinic. The Doctor is the final authority in matters such as this.

Seriously, it depends on which part of China you are going. But generally, you should get Hep A as the minimum, but Hep B is recommended if you are going to be there for any length of time. The latter will take time to finish the course so check it out asap. If you are going to visit rural parts or tropical parts of China, you may need cholera and typhoid shots too. Most large cities are generally OK, especially if you are staying in modern hotels and have only the minimal contact with locals. It isn't that the locals are particularly host to any diseases, but in any pool of population there are always some who may be carrying something nasty. One could catch anything even in London or New York if one rubbed shoulders for prolong periods with the locals at the most basic human levels.

Depends on the region- I went to Beijing and Wuhan, and it was fine... but I couldn't give blood for six months after that, because Wuhan is supposedly classed as a malarial risk zone. My Chinese friend said that was so much bull, but who can say? Your doctor can, maybe some other bright spark on here... it should be fine, but if you were going somewhere relatively undeveloped there could be some risk.

Your personal physician knows which immunizations are appropriate. In consultation with your public health agencies, physicians are kept up-to-date on the ever-changing need for proper health precautions. So call your doc for your answers.
