Your metabolism is a calorie burning machine. Food is the fuel that makes it run. The first thing in the morning, you haven't had anything to eat for a long time. Your metabolism is at it's lowest. Eating breakfast kick starts your metabolism and allows you to start burning calories. It may sound counter intuitive, but you have to eat in order to burn calories.
Think about a fireplace in a cold room. The first time you light the fire, it will take a long time to heat that room. Once the fire is burning, if you keep adding wood (fuel) to it, you'll keep the temperature up. If you let the fire die and the room cool, it takes longer to heat it again. Your metabolism works the same way. That's why it's better to eat 5-6 smaller meals each day than the traditional "three squares" that's been drilled into our heads.

You need more protein for breakfast.
If I have a protein shake with yogurt in it I can last until noon. Anything else, I'm hungry by 10:30.
