we live in a development where there are some kids. they play and have fun and we can hear them which is great. our new neighbors have children that scream at the top of their lungs. even the parents yell (probably where the kids got it from) they are very inconsiderate of everyone that lives around them. They don't make noise for hours on end so noise control can't be called. I've politely told her that their voices carry and that I can't keep my windows open because of the noise. What can I do?

Noisy Neighbors Kids

You can't really do anything about noisy kids because that would be unfair to these kids when there are other kids around that plays. Why not be a good neighbor and make nice with this family because they are new, that way once you get to know the family you will then be able to communicate to them that they are kind of loud and you never know when there is an emergency or not. I think that would be better than making enemies of these people because that is what it looks like from my view of things.

Call your local town/city hall and see if they can help you. But I say this a lot to people who have this situation. I know where we live after 11 pm at night to 7 am it is considered the time that should be free of excess noise. That means no loud music (either form a home or vehicle) no excessive barking dogs no loud screams, loud televisions etc... You get the picture. If the local ordinance has a speculation of there decibel noise level you could monitor it and say that it is in excess during the day But it would have to be monitored form inside your home and with the widows closed etc. I say chances are that kids are not going to apply here if they are just out playing etc. The law may say move to the room furthest from them and close your home up because they have a right to play outside during the day. Loud music is different than kids playing. Or groups outside talking etc. Have you tried to talk to the neighbors and resolve anything from them? Have you contacted the police or authorities on this to have proof of your statements as well? This is important in case you do have a chance to do something, perhaps write down the times how long how late how early etc..

uh, kind of a shot in the dark here, but maybe a hearing problem runs in the family? They could quite possibly not even realize they're yelling. I don't have the most amazing hearing ever, which runs in my family, and I often don't realize the volume of my voice is getting kind of high, especially when I'm under stress. It's taken years upon years to adjust the level of my voice to an appropriate level for appropriate situations.

Or they could just be a loud family.

There's not alot that you can do other than talk to neighbors to find out if they're bothered by it too, then approach the family, or use an air horn when they get really obnoxious, but that's kind of infantile. Especially if they're not violating city or community noise ordinances/rules.

You have to realize that you live in a complex and no matter what you do, you'll always have a neighbour or 2 that you just can't live with. Maybe if you can confront the parents again and see what they can do to calm their children down a little, but children will be children and they are going to make noise. If nobody can help you with the noise, try calling the police or the city to see what you can do. Maybe you can even try with all your neighbours to see if you can push them out, with a petition. There are so many ways but the only way you'll ever get peace and quite is buying your own home.

Good Luck!

Unfortunately you may have already done all that you can- which was politely ask them to turn down the volume. Unless they are making noise late at night or early in the morning, beyond "normal" daytime timeframes, you may just have to live with it. The whole family is likely so ingrained with screetching instead of talking, that even when reminded politely by neighbors to keep it down, it would be really difficult to break the habit. If you live in an apartment complex perhaps you could talk to the rental manager, but other than that, just keep a radio on low, to have a "white noise" type of effect to block out as much as you can.

You made the first step by letting them know. Your next step, you could call the police for noise. Just state you understand kids like to play and be loud, but explain how they scream at the top of thier lungs. I am sure one knock on their door from ther police will quite them down. If you don't want to call, just walk into the station.

Well if you live in an appartment complex of something like that tell the ladlord they can put a stop to it. But in your house in a neighbor hood there is not much more youcan do except keep telling her that it bothers you.

Its tricky but I advice you to try and have a meeting with other neighbours and tackle the problem collectively to avoid witch-hunting. Doing it individually may bring more complications. If that does not succeed then you need to see a competent authority over it and lodge a complaint. Sorry for that.
