Would like to go in self catering accommodation such as a cottage, near the sea side.

I'm a Yank who has spent some time at Bank End Farm, Roadhead, Carlisle, CA6 6NU. The place is wonderful. Absolutely spectacular scenery, great rural location, proprietors very welcoming and friendly. Two self-catering cottages, both quite nice and very well kept.
Unfortunately, it is not by the sea but it is well worth going.
An easy drive to Scotland (right down the road). Gretna Green, Alston, the Lake District, Hadrian's Wall, etc. not a bad drive away (an hour, more or less).
Can't wait to go back.

Forget the sea, travel to Keystone in Colorado and snowboard.
UK sucks compared to Keystone btw.
