Ecosystem is the smallest functional unit of the biosphere.
An ecosystem has two components: structural and functional.
Abiotic factors provide the structural components.Various trophic levels and the flow of energy through them provide the functional component. The energy flows from one trophic level to the next higher beginning from the producers.The latter obtain energy from the sunlight. The flow of chemicals occurs within the trophic level.With the death and decay,the chemicals are finally returned to the environment and then they enter the trophic level.

The term ecosystems refers to the combined physical and biological components of an environment. An ecosystem is generally an area within the natural environment in which physical (abiotic) factors of the environment, such as rocks and soil, function together along with interdependent (biotic) organisms, such as plants and animals, within the same habitat. Ecosystems can be permanent or temporary. Ecosystems usually form a number of food webs Types of ecosystems Agroecosystem Aquatic ecosystem Chaparral Coral reef Desert Forest Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Human ecosystem Large marine ecosystem Littoral zone Marine ecosystem Prairie Rainforest Savanna Subsurface Lithoautotrophic Microbial Ecosystem Taiga Tundra Urban ecosystem

In actual sense ecosystem is very much related to the term Ecology which literally means study of the relationships between organisms and them with their surroundings. In nature the organisms and the surroundings come a balance by adapting themselves with each other and to the weather prevailing there. Thus a local miniature climate is formed with all the organisms, vegetation and the weather - this is called an ecosystem.

Eco = Ecological
System = (self explanatory)

The "Ecosystem" refers to the natural way the earth supports life. It is a delicate balance between predator and prey, good and bad, hot weather and cold.

When the system is in balance all prosper. When it is out of balance, say like when man pollutes it, the system goes out of balance. Carbon Dioxide is an example of how man is changing his environment. By causing Global Warming the system is thrown out of balance. One of two things can happen: first, the system can collapse completely and the earth experience significant heating or cooling, OR, the system can react to balance itself out.

Case in point; say, we cause the temperature to rise an average of 3 degrees; this could cause a shift in weather patterns causing more clouds and rain. Water dissolves Carbon Dioxide, thus causing a balancing of the temperature. On the other hand, the increased temperature could cause the earth to experience hot dry dusty climates where in the temperature of the earth could run away (get hotter and hotter).

In my opinion, the earth would balance itself back to what we like to call normal. However, I'm no expert on this matter, so take what I say with a grain of salt. It could be meaningless. But this is what I believe will happen.
