How did they season the salmon? What did they use to hold the salmon over the fire. When I was a kid our family used to go to a salmon bake at the Taholah Indian village out on the Washington coast. I would love to learn how to cook salmon like that! I remember it being the best fish I have ever eaten.

They put the fish in an enclosed smoker. Large enough to hold alot of salmon. They smoked enough for the village and for many days because they didn't have preservatives and smoking keeps the meat edible for a long time. Like beef jerky.

Another method is to take a plank of mesquite or cedar and soak it in water until it's wet through, place the fish on it and place it on the hot coals.
