what a lot of these whipper snappers don't know, george best was the first player to have pop star appeal.
"el beatle" and was instrumental in getting a lot of females involved in football(and thats not sexist its just fact) so with women involved the natural progression was to take the aggression out of the crowds, so familys started going, then bigger stadiums, more money, and the crazy amounts players get today is down to THE BELFAST BOY.
when pele said he though that george was the best, that was good enough for him and me.
p.s. GEORGE BEST WAS PROUD TO BE IRISH AND CARRIED A BRITISH PASSPORT so what does that tell you.

PeterM is correct, Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain but is part of the United Kingdom. Before 1983 Great Britain & Ireland contested the Ryder Cup with America, although the adjective 'British' is less clear cut and may (?) incorporate NI.
Anyway, pedantry over and back to the question. I personally don't think there has ever been a better British (& Irish) footballer. I'm glad to see someone mention Duncan Edwards though, for the younger generation imagine if Rooney died tomorrow how history would view him.
Best did things on a football field nobody else could even think of.

He was an amazing footballer, he was good enough to use his talent all over the world. I wish I saw him when he played for Hibs in 1979 when he signed a 1 year contract in November, (though he never played for the full year) He wore a number 11 Hibs strip, he made his Hibs debut against St Mirren at Paisley and he was capped 37 times for N.Ireland! Brilliant guy.

Probably not. Feel very annoyed that people are using this question to bring up the whole Irish/British/proddie thing, it really does ma nut in!! He remains an iconic figure and yes, he was to fitba what the Beatles were to music, but with a hell of a lot more depth and skill.

As a footballer he was exciting, talented and controversial, as a man he was flawed, no idea whether he was catholic or not and would happily go to my grave not knowing!

Possibly, but there have been cases cited for Jimmy Johnstone as Di Stefano had him play at his exhibition testimonial, I think and he was the only Brit there (again I think) but one thing is certain, Di Stefano gave him the match ball.
another fact about "Wee Jinky" when they were forged Johnstone was the ONLY LIVING footballer to have a Faberge egg made in his honour, I think eleven were cast. No mention of Best.
There was another footballer who plied his trade at Reading called Robin Friday who, because of his disciplinary problems, never got to the top flight. He was however voted the Reading player of the Millennium in 1999, and he worried teams' defences like a rabid dog in a sheep farm. A book dedicated to him "The Greatest Footballer You Never Saw" should be available.

My Dad met his Dad in the Mount Potinger Road, Belfast, July 1972. Nice man, bit drunk. George at his peak was the greatest, he didn't last the course though and once he left the protection of ManU he was doomed.

'i blew a lot of money on birds, booze, and fast cars.... the rest i just squandered...' Best. genius.

Though who knows though what Duncan Edwards would have done. Giggs might not have hit the same level, but consistently excellent for 17 years who else has done that at the top level?
