It depends on what type of bird you are trying to attract. If you want goldfinches, fill with thistle seed. Make sure your feeder is the type the birds you want to attract uses, like goldfinches, they want to perch and eat through a small hole and peck out the seed like they are gathering from a plant. Check out the link I have given you to give more detail for the birds you are wanting to feed.

That's a good question. I like to attract larger birds such as cardinals, mourning doves and blue jays to my feeders, so I use a generic wild bird mix - generous helpings of sunflower seeds & cracked corn. Believe it or not, smaller birds such as goldfinches will come and literally push these larger seeds out of the feeder in search of smaller seeds they can enjoy. So there I was with all the seeds on the bed of my garden below the feeder. They taught me to add a few smaller bird feeders with small seeds such as millet and niger just for them. If I let those run out, they go back to tossing out the bigger seeds from the other feeders in search of more seeds to their liking.

I agree that the suet-based bricks are handy to keep out during the winter to add fat to the diet of wild birds.

You need to fill it with birdseed that will attract the birds you want in the feeders.
If you want alot of songbirds like cardinals then get a bag of songbird feed with sunflower seeds and dried fruits in it.
If you just want sparrows and chickedees then just get the regular mixed feed with millet in it.
I also have a suet cake hanging on a tree limb which attract woodpeckers of all shapes and sizes.

They sell "bricks" of solid bird seed in the Wal-mart pet section.

These work great!
