Ok so the question has two ways to approach it. One the respect way but what about the other. I look outside and see a flag at half mass, so something must have happened. But to my knowledge the flag has been like that the whole year. Why do we have to leave it lower so much. I like to see it at the top. Do we have to lower our flag when we can just leave it up? Anyways my thoughts are done, but really?

To my knowledge it is only at half mast when a dignitary passes away or some other tragic even befalls our country. Like you I love seeing our national flag fly high but I am also deeply moved to see it at half mast in honor of whomever it is there for.
I do not know if has been at half mast for a year but I do know typical protocol is for it to remain at half mast for a month.
