The dealership will do all the paperwork for you. They usually use a dmv service. If you look at your paperwork you should see the charge. You should get the plates before your temp registration expires (in most states less than 30 days.)

If you buy a car in another state, you have to get the title and send it to the motor vehicle department in the state where you reside, to get proper registration and a license plate.
I live in PA. It can take as long as 6 weeks to get a plate here. In my state, the DMV will not register a vehicle at an out-of-state address and send the plate there.

If you bought the car from a dealer, they should notify you and send you the tags in the mail. Most dealerships that do out of state titling and registering use a title service from that state. Sometimes that agency sends you the plates, sometimes the dealership does. Providing you paid the proper fees to the dealership, including your state sales tax it basically depends on when they sent out the work to your state to process it, and how long it takes your state to process it.

If you buy a car out of state, you won't get a plate from the state where you purchased it. You must take the paperwork to the DMV in your state and register and title it in your own state.

I live in NC, and bought my Lexus in Fl. It took 2 months for the tag to come through.
I never had to deal with the DMV though, that was all handled by the dealer
