Some people suggested that Sony is cheaper than Canon and provides same functionlities in lesser price. What should I do? I read reviews. They suggest 'Canon'.

I found a great camera review site last year, and have used it to purchase two cameras. Several friends have used it as well to make up their minds. You can see which camera they recommend and why, and they'll tell you all of the pros and cons of each camera, as well as give examples of different types of pictures taken with each. By the way - I ended up with two Canons (A620 and S3 IS). I made a spreadsheet with all of the features I wanted and then used the site to fill in about a dozen cameras. Canon had the cameras I wanted and I love them. But that doesn't mean that Sony won't have the camera YOU want.

I really don't want to confuse you even more. Apparently the A 540 is a very good camera. According to Website dpreview can be bought for between $175 and $200. If you opt for more optical zoom yes the Canon Power-shot S3 IS is a very good camera but costs more than your A 540. Likewise my camera Sony CyberShot DSC-H2. Equally as good is Canon PowerShot S2 IS.
You never mentioned the Sony model you were looking at, but I'd say for $180 to $200 + memory card you're getting a very good camera at a goog price. Again check out above Website.

Everyone seems have their favorites, and Sony does make some very good cameras. But in every review I've read in recent months the Canons are at the top of the list. I've been very happy with the A530 I bought last year.

I have a Canon S2IS and a A530 which is the same as the 540 but has 5 megapixels instead of 6. You can't go wrong with Canon.

Canon uses real optical glass in their lenses and they specialize in making cameras. Sony makes all kinds of popular electronics and just happens to make digital cameras because they are a money maker.
I would go with Canon.
