I am from Spain and getting married to a New Zealand guy. We don't have the figure of the best man in my country, so I'm not sure what it he supposed to do... I know he gives a speech at some point... but does he also walk down the aisle with the groom, carry the rings or buys the bride's flowers? I've heard so many different things from different people I'm a bit confused. Any help? Thanks.

In my experience the following things are considered the role of the Best Man:

1. To be a witness in the Wedding ceremony, to the marriage.
2. To hold the rings for the Groom (unless you use a ring bearer)
3. In ceremonies I have attended, the Groom, the Best Man and the ushers usually come in from the side and stand together as the bride walks down the aisle on the arm of her father.
4. The Best Man gives a toast to the Bride and Groom at the Reception, usually recalling moments from the couple's engagement and some good points about their relationship with best wishes for their happiness.
5. If the Best Man is a true friend to the couple, I think that there is a certain memory in this relationship that helps to generate a rethinking process encouraging the groom to work things out with the bride when life is running a difficult course and as they say, "the honeymoon is over." So there is a future purpose for that position in the wedding party, even if it is only a memory because people tend to move on. If the Best Man is a brother, the family ties help to keep the relationship anchored as well.

I have not ever seen the best man be responsible monetarily for anything within the wedding ceremony except to pay for his tux rental and a gift for the couple as customary. I believe that the main idea behind this is that the man best able to stand up for the groom and second his committment to the marriage, is the best man for the job. In the traditional ceremony the question is asked does anyone see any reason why this couple should not be joined in holy matrimony? The Best Man is literally saying that there is no known impediment to the marriage by his presence.

The best mans duty is to give the bride head before the wedding to get her ready for the husband. No a lot but just enough to get her nice and wet.

1. Get the groom to the wedding on time
2. Make sure the groom doesn't loose the ring
3. Make sure the groom is sober, or at least looks sober at the wedding
4. Keep track of the other groomsmen

What the best man does in NZ may differ from the UK/US, but see:

I'm Scottish and I doubt the little bit of Scottish "history" there!
