Our police forces in the United States have guns that only they can fire. We have keys so only we are the only ones that can open our cars to keep thieves from stealing them. Why don't our troops get guns that only they can fire. So when the opposition forces get ahold of them they cannot use them against us?

The military doesn't want a unproven weapon like the barely used guns you talk about. It should also be noted that the people with our guns are the police and Iraqi army units that have gone rogue. So your idea wouldn't do anything except drive up the cost of our weapons. As for cars well they get stolen all the time here as well even the best anti-theft devices are quickly defeated by competent thieves usually people who maintain the cars so they know the manufacturers access codes. The other way cars are stolen in Iraq is that they car jack the vehicle and so again your ideas are worthless in solving this problem. It should be noted that in combat weapons jam or break so a soldier simply picks up a down mans gun your solution would prevent a soldier from using another soldiers gun a big no no in military circles. Even if you fixed all those problems you would find the enemy mainly uses AK-47's and the like not US weapons.

I doubt many insurgents have gotten ahold of American weapons. Anyways what do you mean by guns that only American troops can fire? I'm sure there is some type of lock for Assault Rifles, but what point would it serve? What if the gun was locked while a soldier was walking back to base and insurgents followed and started shooting him? He wouldn't be able to unlock his weapon in time.

Unless it was digital, such as thumb access, etc. But having that done would cost money, that the government shouldn't or wouldn't waste on.
