In sports mere participation itself is a matter of pride.Though only one is going to win, only with successive attempts you can go up the ladder.and eventually win.

If you asked that question, that I would assume you are speaking of yourself...and the fact that you have identified the problem, you can work on the solution.
The answer is yes...Still have a fair crack, if you believe there is a tiny chance if you give it 100%, and leave the rest to God, trusting faithfully in His word "You can achieve all things in My Name" and st paul saying "I can achieve all thiings through Christ who strengthens me..."
Then offcourse, God gave us logic...You cannot expect to jump straight to the moon on a trampoline, that would be insane...But if you know that whatever it is you are aiming from is achievable, and you can give it 100%, with a tiny hope, then leave matters in His Hands, and see what He says.
Unless offcourse it is God's will for you not to get this particular thing or achieve that particular ambition, because He has higher plans for you.
You really need to lift your esteem by trusting in the Lord...and He will Guide you.
God Bless you my friend, and may He heal the wounds of your esteem and push you to all hights you deserve.

I have high integrity, but enjoy fencing, sabre to be exact, and I have little hope of winning or that well, but it is something I enjoy. I do not see myself as a person who has low esteem, just a beer belly that needs help to keep in shape.

you dont need to tell us you have low self esteem, the question is obviously stated.
Of course you should test yourself, why quit something you know you cant win?? why start is a better question?
Here's why...
You can only benefit from competing if you are testing yourself or competing against what you think you cant do...
Do or do not...
Try (there is no try not)

I don't have low self esteem but I would and do test my integrity all of the time. My main goal in life is to be loyal to my friends and family ALWAYS and so I'm evaluating everything I do along that yard stick. (meter stick when I'm in Europe)

Done it all my life.........I like the challenge. I know that I'll never be the best skier or sales and marketing manager, or driver, or writer; but the challenge to improve my skills is enough for me to try and try hard. Nothing to do with self esteem it is to do with not sitting and rotting away while others........some better at things than me and some not, actually do something.....I'll try to be the best I can be without obsessing on the task and losing my perspective on life.

It's not the winner in the race of life that will gain everlasting life, but like Jesus said, it's the one that have endured till the end.
Matthew 24:13..But he that has endured to the end is the one that will be saved.
Along with that comes the help God provides.
Psalm 55:22....Throw your burden upon Jehovah himself,
And he himself will sustain you.
Never will he allow the righteous one to totter.

Sure, for example, I vote Libertarian. The Republicrats have things pretty well sewed up, but I decided that I would not support the "lesser of two evils". Our integrity is tested all the time! Will you choose to worship the Almighty? (His name is YHVH) even though people all around you are worshiping pagan idols??? Salvation depends on your faithfulness!!!!

I would. That is how we learn, by practice. The person who wins has been where you are even if it was years ago. Also know that others are watching you that have the same fears or doubt that you have. You are a mentor to people without even knowing it.
What's the worse that can happen? Go for it.

Yes. There is a great deal of merit in trying to improve yourself by taking a risk. Trying and not winning is far different than trying and failing. There is great personal satisfaction in making the effort to succeed.
