Apparently, seven storeys is the optimum height for a cat's survival chances. Research (presumably involving the tossing of cats out of high-rise windows) shows that at heights above or below this seven-storey datum, the injury suffered is greater. It would appear that below this height, cats do not have sufficient time to spread out and develop a "parachute" effect whilst above this height, they just go splat.

I kid you not about this. I first heard it on Stephen Fry's QI program.

Hi Jamiela...it depends on the fall as most cats cannot survive a fall from very high because their body isn't capable of absorbing the shock when landing. There are some exceptions, but it's rare.

Cats who fall from high places suffer from high-rise syndrome and this can have devastating effects on the body. More about high-rise syndrome withy cats:

Ok easy 1234321 or whatever. Your logic is incredibly stupid!!!

"Throw him/her from the Empire State Building because as long as he doesn't land on his back, he's ok!!!"

I hope to God you don't have a cat.

ANYWAY, when my cat fell of the balcony, he fell from the 7th floor. Fortunately, bushes were able to break his fall and he suffered a broken paw. I'm sure had there not been any bushes, the damage would've been devastating.

It's an "it depends" answer. I read of a WW2 pilot who bailed out of a burning plane and fell 20,000 feet. He landed in a pine forest covered with thick snow. Lucky man - he escaped with a few bruises! I think my heart would have given up long before I reached the ground - I hate heights!

now let me tell you!! a cat has a better chance of surviving a huge jump(like the empire state building)than a low jump. when they jump from up high, it givees them more time to land on their paws. from low spaces, they do not have as much time and land on their back, and hurt themselves.

I agree with jellicoe. If Stephen Fry says it, it's good enough for me.
