Not all priests are child molesters. However, majority of child molesters are priests. This is basically the fault of the mother church. It's against human nature to demand that priests be celibate. They are mere human beings with similar sexual urges.
The aim of the Roman Catholic Church is not to support their minister's families should he be allowed to marry. That's why the Vatican is so rich and even own a whole city in Rome. When I was in Rome several years ago, I toured and really appreciate the gorgeous St. Peter's Basilica. Tourism is a big money-making venture for them over there.
The mother Catholic Church do take action on these child molesters. They reassign them . They make a lot of out of court settlements for any reported cases. Up to the present tme, the church refuses to acknowledge the existence of this problem.
Did you know that they found a lot of baby remains in monasteries and nunneries formerly occupied by nuns? As in everything else, there's an existence of graft and corruption and scandals.

There's no excuse for this and we as Catholics are ashamed of this going on. All are sinners priests, layppl , bishops and even the pope, plus the abuses that occurred a long time ago f ex in the 70 psychiatry has changed it's views on abuse since then and I think that some bishops were fooled by some charlatan therapists.
The Church has always regarded child molestation as mortal sins with hard ecclesiastical punishments, pedophiles and homosexuals are prohibited from being ordained to the priesthood good pope John XXIII was the one who reiterated that teaching.
The discipline of celibacy is not against nature and is following the example of Jesus Himself who reccomends it in the gospel and St Paul does as well.

Yes and I'll admit that not all homosexuals are paedophiles.
I don't know. There should be special punishments for those who abuse their positions in such fashion and not a shroud of secrecy or being a law unto themselves as if they were a military base or something. We as a society should not blame anyone but the perpetrator of the crime.
I think their molestations have contributed to a large number of atheistic and/or homosexual boys who grew up to become men but their true growth in the Lord was stunted. I guess it could be called spiritual murder or attempted spiritual murder.

Who is "they"?
Ever person conviced of abusing children is subject to the law. Priests can, and do, go to jail. It is up to the victims to prosecute. If somehoew it gets swept under the carpet then it is an abuse of the law.
Times have changed, people no longer disbelieve a child just because it is a child. The world has changed too. Every paedophile must be brought to justice.

They have done something about it. And it is actually a very small percentage. Same as general population. To answer your question another way, why do so many families cover it up? Same reasoning probably applies to the Church.

When we value anything more than the Truth (In this case the "reputation of the 'church'") we show that we do not value the truth enough. If we put anything above the honor of YHVH we prove that we have "Gods" before Him, and thus we are transgressors.
